My First Barre Class

I’m on a never-ending journey to find a fitness class that I love and gives me a great workout so I can lose weight. I’ve decided to try a new fitness class every month, and hopefully, I can find multiple things that I love. I am hoping that when I find the class I love, I’ll look forward to working out instead of dreading it. I’ve tried a few fitness classes already, I really love yoga but I practice it at home now. Some other fitness classes I’ve taken were not the right fit for me. Either they were not made for a beginner, even though they assured me I would be fine, or not a tough enough workout for me to stick to it. I’m hoping to explore more fitness classes and find the one that is a right fit for me.

Just a brief disclaimer, I am in no way a fitness professional and I am not athletic either. Anything I write about will come from a perspective of someone who is trying their best while being really out of shape. So please don’t be intimidated to try anything I write about. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

This month I decided to try Barre. Barre is a ballet inspired workout that has elements of strength and cardio. The major benefits are improved posture, muscle definition, increased flexibility, grace, and stress reduction. It also burns anywhere from 200 to 400 calories an hour. There are a few places in my area that offer Barre classes, I decided to go to a studio that had just opened. It’s locally owned, has an amazing vibe, and a great name. It’s called the Wild Lemon! I love lemons so much. The name really stood out to me and has a more lighthearted feel to it than other fitness studios in my area. After stalking their web page for awhile, I decided to go try it out!

The studio is in an old gas station, but it’s beautiful. I was nervous about going, but as soon as I walked into the studio all of my fears vanished. The moment I walked into the door, my instructor greeted me with a warm welcome. She gave me a tour of the studio. I wish my apartment looked like this studio. It has white walls, gorgeous white wood flooring, wooden doors, and an amazing amount of natural light. I felt relaxed just standing in the space, it felt like home. After the tour, she told me I needed to grab a mat, a ball, and hand weights. Everything I needed was provided to me by the studio. Once I gathered all of my things, she introduced me to another student in her class who was also a beginner. The woman greeted me with a warm smile and we started talking about how we wanted to find a fitness class that we loved. She said that she was so excited to be at the Barre class and that I would enjoy it.

Soon after our conversation, the class started. My instructor played a playlist she called the bad-ass women playlist. She made sure I was comfortable and then we did some warm up stretches that were similar to the stretched in yoga. After we stretched we moved onto strength training. We started with the upper body, we did a bunch of moves with the hand weights. I had a pretty light weight and so I thought it wouldn’t burn. Oh was I wrong, about halfway through upper body my arms and shoulders were on fire! In a good way, of course, we stretched out the muscles we just worked on, drank some water and moved onto the next section, lower body. We used the bar to stabilize ourselves while we did lower body workouts. I worked out muscles I didn’t even know I had, my calves were on fire, and my legs turned into wet noodles. We stretched the muscles again and then worked on abs. When the class was over, the instructor asked me for feedback and I was happy to give it to her.

This class was an hour long, and honestly, it could have been longer. I was sad it was over! Which is crazy, because I’m that person who goes to a fitness class and can’t wait for it to be over with. Barre was such a fun class, and the studio is amazing. There was no pressure on doing everything 100% perfect as long as your posture was correct, my instructor was supportive, and the atmosphere of the studio was so relaxing. I’m writing this a day after I took the class, and I am sore in places I didn’t know could be sore!

I’ve decided to go back once a week! I’m so happy with this class and I recommend it to anyone. It is a workout but it’s great! After class, I felt like I could take over the world, and I’m honestly still feeling that effect even now. If you are in the Pensacola Area, I recommend checking out Wild Lemon. They offer Pilates and TRX as well, I’m hoping to give those a try in the up coming months.

It’s an amazing feeling to finally find something that gives me a workout and that I really like! I encourage you to do the same. Even though I found that I really love Barre, I’m still going to try out other things. Next month I plan on trying out a thing called Orange Theory, I’m not sure if I’ll like it as much, but I’m going to give it a try!
