In November, I will be traveling to Japan with my long-term boyfriend of 6 years. We will be staying for 12 days and 13 nights. This is a dream come true! Ever since I was a child I’ve always dreamt of living in Japan, while I will not be moving to Japan anytime soon I can at least experience it while on vacation.
As a child, I was always drawn to the culture of Japan, I wanted to learn everything I could about Japan. When I was a child, the internet wasn’t as accessible as it is now. Learning anything new required a trip to the school’s library where I found many books and later earned access to the school’s computers. I read so many books and looked up everything I could about Japan. As I got older I started reading manga and watching anime. It gave me glance at what life was like in Japan. I knew that Japan wasn’t filled with magic school girls fighting evil, but the real-life situations in the manga or anime gave me view of a different culture.
All through middle school and high school I watched anime in Japanese to help learn the language. But it wasn’t until I went to college that I started taking my Japanese language learning seriously. I did well in my Japanese classes, I made A’s and B’s in all four of the classes. During class one day, my Japanese teacher reminded us that we could apply to study in Japan for a summer semester. Until then, I never thought I would be able to go to Japan. It seemed so far away and so out of reach for me.
I applied, but I wasn’t chosen for the summer program. I was disappointed but applying made me realize that maybe traveling to Japan wasn’t so out of my reach and that I could go. I continued to study my Japanese and when I graduated from College in 2015 I tried to keep up with my Japanese. Sadly, my learning took a backseat while I was trying to find a job. It took me about 6 months of working odd jobs that weren’t in my field of study to find my current Job. After about 6 months at my current job, I realized if I budgeted hard enough I could save up and go to Japan!
I started saving and learning Japanese again. I had about a year off from studying Japanese and so I started from scratch. I’m not anywhere near the level I was when I graduated College but I’m getting there. I’ve now been with my company for a year and a half, and I’m finally studying Japanese regularly. I feel good about my studying methods and I’m excited to try to use my early elementary Japanese language while I’m in Japan.
3 months ago, my boyfriend and I finally had enough money to buy our tickets to go to Japan! We also had enough to reserve our housing for the trip. My boyfriend and I decided to go with an Air bnb, which worked out extremely cheap when comparing it to a hotel. Our Air bnb isn’t exactly in Tokyo either, so we’ll be able to experience everyday life. It’s like we are temporarily living in Japan. We will be staying in the Tokyo area for most of the trip but we will be taking the Shinkansen to Kyoto for 2 nights and 3 days.
I’ll be writing more details of our trip as the date gets closer. Once our trip starts I will also be writing about exactly what we did and I’ll be loading tons of pictures and videos onto this blog! I hope you keep coming back to read about my trip!
